Before Surgery
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT:
Your Surgeon’s office will schedule your surgery with the IFSC and you will be informed of the date and time for your surgery.
You will also receive an instruction packet. This packet contains important information you need to heed. This includes:
- Preparation you must do prior to your arrival at IFSC.
- Laboratory tests or Scans you must have prior to your surgery.
- Changes to your medications prior to your surgery (sometimes 10 days or more).
- Various legal documents and consents required by law.
IFSC will contact you shortly after you are scheduled for surgery:
- We want you to have the safest and best surgical experience possible.
- We can’t do this without your help.
- PLEASE feel free to ASK QUESTIONS, after all it is YOUR surgery!
A nurse will interview you to obtain your health history:

- Past and present Medical problems
- Past Surgeries
- Problems with Anesthesia (you or your family)
- Medications including times taken and dosage
- Allergies and medication problems (Nausea or Vomiting etc.)
She will also give you important instructions, such as:
- When to arrive (This will vary according to your Surgeon and the type of surgery).
- When to stop eating or drinking before surgery (Usually 8 hrs. prior to arrival). Your surgery WILL be cancelled if you eat or drink after that time !!!
- What to bring with you to the IFSC and how to dress. (Such as wearing loose, comfortable clothing etc.)
- Arranging for a ride to and from the IFSC. Under no circumstances can you drive yourself home or walk home.
- Helping you arrange for Laboratory tests, Scans, ECG’s or Medical Consultations
- If you have forgotten to tell us any important health issues (such as a drug allergy), PLEASE tell us upon your arrival.
The business office will verify:
- The Procedure you are having, your Surgeon and the scheduled date and time.
- Your demographic information including your Name, Address, Contact person etc.
- Your payment arrangements including any Insurance information and co pay.
- If your Insurance requires pre authorization we will help you do this. (Please bring your insurance cards with you when you arrive!)
- If you are a private pay patient, payment arrangements can be set up at this time (See ‘Financial Arrangements’).
